Sustainable Alderney is a division of Alderney Marine Limited, consisting of a panel of company shareholders.  Founded in Spring of 2010.

Our bankers are the ethically grounded Triodos, with whom we have a charter to act as a social venture.

Sustainablility is an important issue for every community, but even more so for those that are isolated and fairly small. Alderney is the third largest of the Channel Islands and perhaps the most isolated, it has a resident population of around 2000 people.

Tourism is of vital importance to the economy and so preserving and making good use of the environment is utterly vital.

Our solutions all have one thing in common, they are what we call "Enterprise Lead" which is to say that they should be capable of being self-funding and eventually self-contained.

An example of this is the proposed anaerobic digester, which as well as handling the majority of the island's waste; would also generate water, gas and compost. The sale of which would all contribute to the running costs of the equipment.

We focus our efforts on four main areas, many of which overlap and nearly all projects span more than one:-

Energy.
Pursuing clean and long-lasting production of electricity and fuel, that does not rely on outside jurisdictions or which is exposed to global market fluctuations.

Environment.
Preserving and enriching the varied environment of the island, for people and as valuable habitat.

Waste Management.
Promoting a forward thinking aproach within the States, identifying opportunities to save public funds and make those funds that are necessary achieve the best for the community and the economy.

Re-use.
Nearly all waste materials cost money to ship off the island, by carrying out research into demands and technologies we aim to reduce these shipping costs to zero.

There is a fifth area that we are also interested in - the island's transport links which are currently limited in scale and price-competitiveness. Being sustainable does not mean being cut off.

The way that we plan to do this...

Identify and research the needs of the island and to respond to these needs with practical and cost effective solutions, which are able to survive on their own without constant fund raising.

Educate and publicise the importance of increased sustainability, to promote the work of Sustainable Alderney and to publish reports on findings that can help this and other communities.

Manage the early stages in cooperation with the island's other groups.

Find funding and agree the details with funders and to administer funds throughout the life of the project in accordance with the funder’s wishes.

Ensure that projects remain focussed and on target in the latter stages of development.

For more detail on how we realise our projects please get in touch and we will discuss our operating charter.
