The island ... Alderney, the third largest of the Channel Islands is just 3.5 miles long by 1.5 miles wide, the English coast is 60 miles due north and the coast of Normandy 8 miles east. Though surrounded by deadly rocks and treacherous tides, the island landscape is beautiful and rugged. Visitors and residents enjoy a lifestyle which has been lost on most other British territories. The issues ... The island has only two cargo boat visits per week plus an oil tanker every few weeks so all commodities must come via Guernsey or Poole, making the cost of living very expensive. To compound the problems all bulk waste must be shipped off again adding to environmental “miles” and financial costs. Although a recycling programme started some years ago helps to reduce the implications it can only ever be one part of the solution. Electricity is generated via an oil-fired power station resulting in high fuel prices as oil must be transported in bulk. Fortunately Alderney is at the forefront of a cutting edge tidal power development. Although power generation is still some way in the future Alderney is showing the way ahead, for all the Channel Islands. About Sustainable Alderney ... Through this initiative, Alderney Marine Ltd helps support the island’s move towards a more sustainable and self sufficient future. To bring down the cost of living and reduce the environmental impacts. We do this by finding funding for researchers to carry out work that improves our understanding of the island’s ecology, by helping project managers to find the right rescources and by ensuring milestones mark all the stages of a project. An essential part of our own growth, Sustainable Alderney will help us to find new areas of achievement and to make these available to neighbouring islands and other self-reliant communities. |
